Valentine’s Day with Children

Valentine’s Day is not just for older people. If you have children at home then you need to make the holiday special for them and also try to teach them a lesson of love and affection.

Celebration at school

Many schools celebrate Valentine’s Day and introduce to children the importance of the day. Generally they organize class parties in school and distribute Valentines . Children for sure have some opponents but when it comes to celebrating the day of love together they celebrate it with them and learn tolerance and also learn to appreciate the difference that they all have. I believe it is really meaningful way of celebrating the day with students in the class room.

Gifts for all

The way you celebrate Valentine’s Day within your family affects your children. I think you should let your children feel the importance of the day. You should speak to the school teachers and if they suggest then let your child distribute little Valentines to all the children in the class. This would not only boost the spirit of love but also define equality. Let your children express affection towards people whom they spend time with.

Discourage dislike

Your child may not wish to give a Valentine to a classmate whom he or she doesn’t like . That is not the time to scold the child or allow the child to go his or her way. Make sure to explain the child the importance of gifts and the importance of expressing affection . I suggest, if the child is adamant on not giving gifts to all the children then the child should not be allowed to give gifts to anybody in the class. You may make the child realize how she or he would feel if they didn’t get gifts and everyone else got.

Creative gifts

You may now say that it would be quite expensive to distribute so many gifts. Encourage your child to give hand made gifts and discourage buying gifts from the market. Bring crayons, construction paper, markers, glue, glitter and such things for the child and motivate him or her to create greeting cards or other such kind of gifts for their friends. You may start this exercise a few days before the day otherwise you would have to sit up all night on the 13th to bring the project to completion.

Celebrating with a best friend

Your child may wish to have a special celebration with a special pal. For this you could set up a mini meal party at home or at a pizza restaurant. This should not come into notice of other kids.

Set examples for children

Exchanging gifts at home is another lesson for children. Exchange cards and other handmade stuffs within the family and emphasis on children the strong bond of love and affection. Children pick up habits that parent have. If you celebrate Valentine’s Day with expensive gifts then even your children would want to do the same. If you wish to give an expensive gift to your spouse then give it when children are not around.

Make this holiday and the day of expressing love a special day for children. Let them understand the importance of expressing feelings of affection and let them also understand the importance of heart felt gifts compared to materialistic gifts.
